The Waybacks, Time Weed

When: Fri., Aug. 17, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $15

The cream of the jam-roots set, The Waybacks' brand of string music features healthy doses of irreverence and catchiness that make the songs particularly memorable. Obviously the blend of old-timey and modern sensibilities is hardly novel, but it comes down to touch. That's what sells the droll Western swing of "Tired of Being Right" or their ode to a living fossil, "The Petrified Man." This playfulness dovetails nicely with the front-porch vibe to create some very inviting music. Though it's been four years since their last studio original, Loaded, they've released three album-long covers—Abbey Road, Led Zeppelin and Eat a Peach—with an unannounced new one due soon. Also, Tim Weed. —Chris Parker
