Drama

Director Robert Zemeckis goes nuts with the CGI in telling the true story of Philippe Petit, the French street performer who walked a tightrope across the tops of the World Trade Center towers in 1974. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Petit, and though his accent and wig reek of artifice, he makes up for it with showboating agility. Zemeckis makes sure the film looks wondrous, and while caricature abounds, the execution of the stunt is suspenseful and engaging. There’s no good reason for this to exist, since it’s the same story told in acclaimed documentary Man on Wire. But like his subject, Zemeckis seemed to think, why the hell not?
