The Veldt, Your 33 Black Angels

When: Mon., March 11, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $5

Although The Veldt barely eclipsed cult status after breaking out of Chapel Hill in the early '90s and signing to Mercury, the band foreshadowed an eclectic style where dreamy art-rock meets muscular alt-rock, which TV on the Radio subsequently made famous. Appearing with a pared-down lineup, the Chavis twins—lead vocalist/guitarist Daniel and guitarist Danny—are backed by a rhythm section of Hayato Nakao and Marvin Levi on this string of gigs up and down the East Coast. It's The Veldt's most extensive tour in 15 years.

Gauzy shoegaze still dominates The Veldt's sound. Although the group will soon release a new record, Resurrection Hymns, it remain characteristically diverse. On a pair of newly recorded instrumentals, they range from shimmering post-rock above cavernous electronics to an intense hard rocker pushed by a hypnotic bass groove, heavy drum blasts and eerie samples. Brooklyn's prolific Your 33 Black Angels opens, throwing it back a few decades with druggy, psych-tinged garage rock. Also Tuesday at Local 506 in Chapel Hill with The Breaks and Your 33 Black Angels. —Spencer Griffith
