The whip-smart, philosophizing acid-rap duo The Underachievers give their albums names that sound like King Crimson records—Evermore: The Art Of Duality, for instance. (OK, maybe it’s more like Mars Volta albums, but it is undoubtedly proggy.) The rhymes from Issa Gold and AK are intricate like a solo from Robert Fripp (or Omar Rodríguez-López.) The heady “duality” thing makes sense. By way of the polysyllabic staccato of its rhymes, the group’s “hard.” But the ambient beats, acoustic guitar loops and the confessional nature of these tracks evidence a relatable softness, too. —Brandon Soderberg
