Action/Adventure, Horror

Vampires, werewolves, and a plot, oh my! Director David Slade (Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night) brings a dark edge to the third film installment of Stephanie Meyer's fantasy-romance franchise. Vile Victoria (now played by Bryce Dallas Howard) recruits a blood-sucking army of "newborns" to help exact revenge on Edward (Robert Pattinson) and the angst-ridden Bella (Kristen Stewart)—still the most dysfunctional movie teen this side of Heathers. This installment corrects some of the oversights from the previous two editions, including some welcome flashback exposition about the lycan tribe and members of the Cullen clan. The action sequences propel the narrative, and there are several flashes of sly humor—"Doesn't he own a shirt?" Edward asks about perpetually bare-chested Jacob (Taylor Lautner). Unavoidably, however, the main storyline always reverts back to a tedious love triangle over who Bella really wants to take her literal and metaphorical virginity. Moreover, the three leads remain vapid eye candy, particularly in comparison to a supporting cast that includes Howard, Anna Kendrick, Dakota Fanning and Catalina Sandino Moreno.
