Drama

Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon star in this sequel to 2010's The Trip, where the comedy duo embarked on a restaurant tour of Northern England. This film brings changes in setting, cuisine and perspective. A sense of mortality hovers over their travelogue, which traces the footsteps of Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley during the early 1800s. For all of the gastronomy, stunning scenery and plaintive overtones, the constant sardonic riffing between the two leads is at first the strongest and eventually the weakest element. By the umpteenth time Brydon gorges on impressions of Pacino, Hugh Grant or Robert DeNiro, this mostly sumptuous Brit-wit feast goes stale. Still, directer Michael Winterbottom manages to guide this trip to its poignant destination.
