The Swimming Pool Q's, Marshall Crenshaw

When: Sat., Nov. 9, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $15
This gig represents two distinct musical sensibilities that emerged within Reagan's first term. The songs of Marshall Crenshaw—a Detroit native, Beatles fanatic and Buddy Holly look-alike—offered the simple allure of '50s radio hits with a touch of new wave twitch. Atlanta's The Swimming Pool Q's, though tagged as Southern jangle in the B-52's mode, mined a more confrontational sound, recalling the snarl of their Georgia contemporaries Pylon and the sharp elbows of Beefheart. That's not to say they didn't jangle. Crenshaw has ridden the ups and downs of rock life with panache, exploring the permutations of American roots music over 10 varied records. He's also written a book on rock 'n' roll movie music and hosted a radio show. SPQ have been sporadically active since disbanding in 1992; at present, they've been invigorated by the recent re-release of two key records and a successful Kickstarter campaign. —David Klein
