The Steel Wheels

When: Thu., July 30, 8:30 p.m. 2015
Price: $12-$20
Three pieces of the Americana quartet Steel Wheels were raised by Mennonite families and met while attending Eastern Mennonite University. Their friendship grew into a band. Their tradition-heavy country possesses earnest severity and steadfast nostalgia without being uptight. Singer, guitarist and banjo player Trent Wagler has a greasy manner that’s half Leon Russell, half charming grifter. In April, they released their sharpest, tightest recording, the downbeat Leave Some Things Behind. Highlight “Heaven Don’t Come Round Here” moves like a spiritual and reads like a Drive-By Truckers hard-luck ode. —Chris Parker
