Animation

Like The Simpsons, the Nickelodeon cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants has an anarchic spirit. Episodes head out in a random direction and cheerfully disintegrate, chasing tangents. So it is with this second full-length animated adaptation. Any plot summary would read like a surreal fever-dream, with Aztec human sacrifice and post-apocalypse leather fetishes. Traditional animation gives way to full-on CG in the last third, with Antonio Banderas having fun as the pirate villain. The carefully constructed jokes come hard and fast: Kids and adults will laugh at the same scene for entirely different reasons. It feels like taking good drugs, but don't tell the kids that.
