The Splendor of San Marco

When: Wed., Oct. 28, 7:30 p.m. 2015
Price: $10-$15
With two facing choir lofts, the unusual layout of the Basilica of San Marco in Venice has long provided an intriguing challenge for composers. Giovanni Gabrieli was active there in the late 16th and early 17th century and was one of the foremost practitioners of a style of polychoral writing that pitted different groups of instruments against one another. For this concert, the UNC English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, Baroque Ensemble and Chamber Singers—along with guests from King’s College London and the Royal Academy of Music—will perform works by Gabrieli and others written for that space. —Dan Ruccia
