"The Smoky Mountains of Bohemia"

When Ron Rash's Depression-era novel Serena, set in the Smoky Mountains, was turned into a film, they shot it in—where else?—the Czech Republic. Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper moon over each other in Prague, not Cherokee. Fortunately, Danish director Susanne Bier found Durham native and cineaste Gabriel Paletz working as a writer and film critic in Prague and brought him in as a consultant on the film. With frothy steins full of inside info, Paletz recounts the experience of enforcing Tar Heel regional and historical accuracy in Eastern Europe, complete with images he took on the set. —Chris Vitiello
