They're more prone to cite Cock Sparrer's punk anthems or The Lemonheads' alt-rock mood swings, but Minneapolis band The Slow Death shares plenty of power-chord roar and dirtbag charm with their hometown predecessors The Replacements and Dillinger Four. Don't forget the bruised melodies and constant churn that shoots a straight line to Jawbreaker. Whatever The Slow Death lacks in originality, they make up for in hooks and conviction. Those might seem like punk-rock prerequisites, but the rarity of such traits and The Slow Death's sheer force of will make these distorted chords and simple sing-alongs feel fresh. —Bryan C. Reed
