The Shining | Colony Theater | Screen: Special Showings | Indy Week
This is a past event.
When: Wed., Oct. 21 2015

THE COLONY—The Colony's "Cool Classics" series presents horror classic The Shining, which you've probably already seen too many times. But here are three reasons to see it again: One, Stanley Kubrick's visually disorienting take on Stephen King's novel is a very different experience on the big screen than at home. Two, maybe you haven't seen it since the 2012 release of the documentary Room 237, which explores the obsessive theories that have flourished around Kubrick's enigmatic visual cues. You may have thought the film was simply about an ax-murderous Jack Nicholson chasing a psychic boy through a grand hotel, but now you'll know it's secretly about the Holocaust, the genocide of Native Americans or Kubrick's guilt over helping fake the Apollo 11 moon landing. And finally, this might be one of your last chances to visit the Colony before the beloved little theater shuts its doors for good in late December, so that its owner, Ambassador Entertainment, can renovate The Rialto, another of its fine old indie cinemas in Raleigh. 7:30 p.m., $5, 5438 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, 919-847-5677, —Brian Howe
