The Serpent's Egg

When: Aug. 5-Sept. 5, 7 p.m. 2011
Price: $8-$12 suggested donation

We think it's fitting that Paperhand Puppet Intervention puts on a Labor Day show during its annual summer production run, for this leftist arts collective is nothing if not the embodiment of labor solidarity. This summer's show is called The Serpent's Egg, and it features another dazzling array of large-scale puppets. Reviewing the production for the Indy, Zack Smith praised the puppets but confessed to a bit of uncertainty about the plot and the significance of the title. He averred nonetheless that "in its wordless state, The Serpent's Egg is a lovely piece of all-ages storytelling whose images range from the bizarre to the fantastic, and sometimes both."

This is the last show at the Forest Theatre before the production moves to the N.C. Museum of Art on Friday, Sept. 9. Showtime is 7 p.m., with a musical preshow beginning at 6:20. Admission is a suggested $12 for adults, $8 for children, but no one will be turned away. —David Fellerath
