THE SACRED ART OF THE SAND

MONDAY, MAY 18, CARRBORO

THE ARTSCENTER—The Tibetan Buddhist monks of Drepung Gomang Monastery, who keep their traditions alive while in exile in India, return to The ArtsCenter to build a mandala, grain by colored grain, in the Nicholson Gallery. Through May 23, the gallery will be open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day so the public can observe the creation of the sacred sand art. This May 18 opening ceremony lasts for 90 minutes, after which construction will continue through May 22. The event is free, though donations and proceeds from sales of prayer flags and singing bowls go to the monastery. After a final viewing on May 23, a closing ceremony at 2 p.m. features the destruction of the mandala's elegant cosmological geometry, a sort of beautiful apocalypse where it flows away into the sands of time. Noon, free (donations accepted), 300-G E. Main St., Carrboro, 919-929-2787, www.artscenterlive.org. —Brian Howe
