Drama

In Floria Sigismondi's biopic, the raucous spirit of The Runaways is rendered with cinematic facility—druggy cinematography, expressionistic editing, exceptional production design—but the unfortunate pay-off is the mawkish smack of coming-of-age clich and cautionary wisdom. Enigmatic individuals are collapsed into cardboard characters. Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning) is dressed like a space oddity with a Bridgette Bardot pout, while Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) skulks around with shoulders drooping, bangs in eyes, only ever glaring up to prod someone about her guitar skills or to pounce on them for sex. The film's not a total clunker, but don't expect any new angle on the evils of success that you couldn't catch on VH1. —Ashley Melzer
