The Red Shoes

When: Fri., March 25, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $5 ($3.50 for students)

It might not have lesbian sex and self-mutilation and swan-mutating hallucinations and stuff, but The Red Shoes easily outdoes Black Swan as the best ballet movie ever made—though, really, it's just as harrowing a look at the psychological cost of artistic perfection. Moira Shearer plays the ballerina who becomes muse to Anton Walbrook and lover to Marius Goring, and finds herself torn between love and art, leading to a tragic ending that brings new meaning to "the show must go on."

Written, directed and produced by "The Archers," Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, the 1948 drama is one of the most visually stunning films ever made; this restored Technicolor print should show off its many wonders—from its psychologically rich story to its elaborate ballet to the sumptuous production design. Oddly, it made a generation of little girls want to be ballerinas, though who would want to dance after seeing what this girl goes through? The series is curated by Indy contributor Laura Boyes. —Zack Smith
