If there were ever a Dogme-style revolution in action filmmaking, it could start with this unadulterated adrenaline rush. An elite SWAT team is assigned the daunting mission of raiding a treacherous, virtually impenetrable high-rise tenement deep in Jakarta's slums that serves as sanctuary for a gaggle of dangerous thugs and murderers, led by their kingpin Tama (Ray Sahetapy). This Indonesian import from Welsh-born director Gareth Evans is raw and frenzied, and heavy on blood, ballistics and balls-out martial arts, particularly from co-stars and genre vets Iko Uwais, Joe Taslim and Yayan Ruhian. The fight scenes are exquisite as ballet in their choreography, and the action is visceral sans an overreliance on digital effects. This is not a movie for the squeamish or anyone looking for narrative depth. Instead, it's a pleasingly retro template for all those modern Hollywood action films that pale by comparison.
