SciFi/Fantasy, Suspense/Thriller

A recasting of home invasion thrillers with a twist of dystopian fiction, this film wants you to think it has something new to say about human's capacity for violence but ends up chewing holes in its philosophical heart of darkness. Writer/director James DeMonaco (Assault on Precinct 13) submerges viewers straight into the killing spree on Purge Night 2022 where for 12 hours American citizens can rape, pillage and kill with impunity. Footage of the feeding shows the harsh reality: The rich defile the poor. That's OK for the Sandin family, 1-percenters whose father, James (Ethan Hawke) has made a killing off selling security systems to his rich neighbors. That is until a thug makes his way inside the Sandin's home and a mob of yuppies threaten to decimate everyone inside unless the stranger is handed over. The film quickly gets bogged down with clumsy searching/stalking scenarios, isolation clichés and worn-out plot twists.
