Is it possible, particularly in the Archer era, to cover “Danger Zone” without irony? In the case of Nashville rock opera outfit Protomen, the members are so deeply wrapped in character it’s hard to tell. Performing under names like K.I.L.R.O.Y. and Turbo Lover, these musicians dispatch detailed concept albums from a dark, dystopic corner of the Mega Man video game universe. It works beautifully, and the shows are epic and operatic, blurring hair metal pomp with driving prog intensity. Sure, they can take us into the “Danger Zone,” so long as they stay in character. —Corbie Hill
