THE OVERTONE SERIES: GABRIEL KAHANE WITH THE NC SYMPHONY QUARTET

CAT'S CRADLE, CARRBORO | MONDAY, MARCH 23

Gabriel Kahane's The Ambassador might be one of the best records you didn't hear last year. The composer, singer and pianist crafted elegant songs about Los Angeles that ranged from cheeky, like "Villains (4616 Dundee Dr.)," to gut-wrenching, such as "Empire Liquor Mart (S. Figueroa St.)." Sony Masterworks, the classical division of the major label, released it, but the strong, cerebral pop could have benefited from the indie world's PR machine. As part of the new Overtone Series, a local effort to push classical music beyond concert halls, Kahane will join the North Carolina Symphony's string quartet and violinist Jennifer Curtis. Last November, the quartet performed a clumsy and uncertain interpretation of Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" with electronic artist Blursome. But Kahane's classical background should help put everyone at collaborative ease. Together, they'll play songs from The Ambassador, some of Kahane's older material and, as he suggests, a few curveballs, too. 7:30 p.m., $12$15, 300 E. Main St., Carrboro, 919-967-9053, www.catscradle.com. —Allison Hussey

Correction: An earlier version of this preview stated the Overtone Series was a production of the North Carolina Symphony. It is an independent operation, though the N.C. Symphony is participating in this event.
