THE OUTSIDERS AND WARGAMES

FRIDAY, JULY 10, DURHAM

CAROLINA THEATRE—It's '80s hardcore night at Retroclassics with two formative flicks from 1983. One of Francis Ford Coppola's few hits of the decade, The Outsiders adapts S.E. Hinton's classic YA novel about outcast lower-class teens dealing with gang conflicts and growing up. It's notable for the sheer density of young actors it helped bring to prominence, including Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane and, of course, C. Thomas Howell as Ponyboy, who receives the immortal advice to "stay gold." For its part, Wargames gave birth to a generation of hackers who wanted to imitate Matthew Broderick's David Lightman and his ability to change his grades on the school computer ... or inadvertently start a nuclear war when he hacks into NORAD. Both of these films hold up pretty well as solidly acted, intelligently written and vastly entertaining. "How about a nice game of chess?"

7 p.m., $9, 309 W. Morgan St., Durham, 919-560-3030, www.carolinatheatre.org. —Zack Smith
