The Old Ceremony

When: Fri., Aug. 24, 6 p.m. 2012
Price: Free

Fairy Tales and Other Forms of Suicide, the new LP from Chapel Hill band The Old Ceremony, finally lives up to the tense, darkly tinged pop-rock of the quartet's live show. The guitar lines of leader Django Haskins lend grit to the lavish accouterment of fiddle, glockenspiel and organ. Bolstered by lilting, melancholic melody, Haskins leads his band with a slightly smoky croon, singing with quiet confidence in the softer moments and digging in with a belted growl when the songs reach their crescendos. At its best, The Old Ceremony reinvigorates old-school rock tropes with renewed aplomb. —Jordan Lawrence
