The Nth Power, Doby

When: Tue., April 5, 9 p.m. 2016
Price: $10-$12
Nikki Glaspie, a powerhouse drummer who’s backed Aaron Neville and Dumpstaphunk and was part of Beyoncé’s all-female band during her 2007 tour, powers this smooth soul-funk ensemble. It’s rooted in the New Orleans’ second-line traditions but tempered by jam-circuit proclivities. The grooves are hard, inventive, and afforded a unique vibe via the unusual rhythmic structures of djembe player Weedie Braimah. This, especially, distinguishes Nth Power from its peers. —Patrick Wall
