The Night Visitor

When: Wed., Jan. 9, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $5.50

Film snobs who worship at the altar of Swedish cinema, please remember: Not all was Ingmar Bergman in that fine country's film history. Back in the pre-Steig-Larsson days when the term "Swedish Thriller" could provoke a paroxysm of laughter, 1971's The Night Visitor cast the venerable Max von Sydow (still getting Oscar nods in his 80s!) as Salem, an escaped mental patient headed after his sister (Liv Ullmann). An inspector (Trevor Howard, Most British Person Ever until Benedict Cumberbatch came along) investigates to determine whether Salem might be innocent of a crime for which he was convicted. Though there's very little information on this film out there, that's often the best kind of film—and the kind that can take you by surprise. Besides: Swedish people! The 8 p.m. screening costs $5.50 and includes classic trailers. —Zack Smith
