THE NORTH CAROLINA SYMPHONY'S RUSSIAN SPECTACULAR

MEMORIAL HALL & MEYMANDI CONCERT HALL, CHAPEL HILL & RALEIGH

THURSDAY, FEB. 19–SATURDAY, FEB. 21

With a concert in Chapel Hill and a two-night stand in Raleigh, The North Carolina Symphony offers four different views of Russia. Full of bluster, bombast and soaring melodies, Borodin's Overture to Prince Igor shuttles us to the 12th century. And with In the Steppes of Central Asia, he paints a surprisingly warm portrait of Russia's frozen frontier. From the height of the empire, Rimsky-Korsakov's Russian Easter Overture renders a delightful wash of clanging bells, chants, fanfares and pseudo-pagan celebrations. Finally, the Sinfonia Concertante summarizes Prokofiev's musical life with glistening lines for solo cello, pungent dissonance and an undercurrent of disappointment with the Soviet regime. Arrive early for a pre-concert talk by the symphony's Scholar in Residence (and INDY contributor) Will Robin. Thursday, 7:30 p.m., $10–$65, 208 E. Cameron Ave., Chapel Hill. Friday–Saturday, 8 p.m., $10–$65, 2 E. South St., Raleigh, 919-733-2750, www.ncsymphony.org. —Dan Ruccia
