The National, Owen Pallett

When: Mon., Oct. 4, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $26-29

When derided, New York's The National are cast as just another boring, sullen indie rock band, led by a singer that's too cool to croon exactly and backed by two sets of brothers more attuned to subtlety than sensation. But those criticisms are exactly what makes The National so worthwhile: Frontman Matt Berninger delivers his phrases with beguiling indecision, stuck somewhere between being a heartthrob and a heartbreaker. "Make us laugh/ or nothing will," he sings on "Little Faith," hanging words between exuberance and exhaustion. And on the new High Violet, those brothers arrange with an astounding interest in texture, scattering guitars and rhythms into an impressionistic framework that, indeed, feels like another sullen indie rock band—just that much smarter and well considered. Owen Pallett opens.—Grayson Currin
