The Muslims, Bucket, Truth Club

When: Sat., Dec. 30, 9 p.m. 2017
Price: $5

For marginalized people, simply existing in public can be a radical act. That's one of the tenets of The Muslims, a rowdy young punk act out of Durham. Its members are all queer people of color, and its songs are all short, mighty blasts against forces of oppression. The band summed up its multilayered mission statement in late November on Facebook: "We're here to shit on all forms of white supremacy and fragility, Islamaphobia, homophobia, fuckboyism, liberal gummies, hipster trash cans and anyone who dislikes candy corn." Well, there you have it, though we're not quite sure what qualifies as a liberal gummy (Haribo? Trolli? Weird nonspecific off brands?). Durham's Sister, Brother opens with an unsettling and immersive set of scattershot, synthy noise compositions. Plus Bucket and Truth Club. —Allison Hussey
