The Muppets

When: Fri., July 20, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $4, free to museum members

Slip the kids a cappuccino so they can stay up late to see The Muppets at the NCMA's outdoor amphitheater. Everybody's favorite felt menagerie returned to the big screen last year in this schmaltzy musical romp featuring Jason Segel and Amy Adams operating at nearly insane levels of perkiness. The story centers on a new puppet named Walter whose identity crisis launches Segel and Adams into a quest to get the now-far-flung Muppets back together. Rounding up cast members à la The Blues Brothers—Animal, for instance, is in anger management rehab—the gang stages a last-ditch comeback telethon to keep evil oil tycoon Chris Cooper from razing the old Muppet Theater. More than just a grab at ticket sales and a merchandizing bump, this movie passed the kid test in my household, winning my daughters over despite their never having seen The Muppet Show. —Chris Vitiello
