The Mountain Goats, Mount Moriah, Midtown Dickens. SOLD OUT

When: Sat., July 31, 10 p.m. 2010

John Darnielle, who has recorded and performed as The Mountain Goats since 1991, rides hard for his enthusiasms. Whether talking black metal in his last-word column for the magazine Decibel, praising the Bowerbirds on his blog Last Plane to Jakarta or playing multiple benefits for cancer, animal rights and transgender groups, Darnielle delivers his ideas and opinions with the same energy he used when he first howled his songs into a boombox. In 2006, talking about his decision to take locals Bellafea on a national tour, Darnielle told me, "I think you don't see a stage presence like Heather McEntire's more than a few times in your life. She's unbelievable." McEntire still leads Bellafea, but these days she's also the co-owner of Holidays for Quince Records and the frontwoman of Mount Moriah. With a slate full of upcoming releases (Filthybird, The Moaners and Mount Moriah), Holidays for Quince ostensibly needs a little financial boost for operations. And so, the ever-beneficent Darnielle will play this fundraiser solo, meaning it sold out weeks ago. Get in line, though, and maybe you'll still get lucky. Mount Moriah also uses the night to release its excellent one-sided 12", The Letting Go. Midtown Dickens starts the show at 10 p.m. —Grayson Currin
