The Motet, Tiny Boxes

When: Sun., April 28, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $14-18

Nine-piece ensemble The Motet has been modernizing Afrobeat for more than a decade, infusing the form with jazz, funk and Latin flavors while stretching out their tunes with lengthy live improvisations. The group's latest, 2009's Dig Deep, is heavy on covers of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti but is otherwise more progressive than The Motet has ever been. The amalgamation of electronics, keys and horns—fueled, as always, by propulsive grooves—show The Motet getting plenty ambitious on the sprawling studio foundations, even if the edge of the band's early work is too often smoothed out along the way. Live, that shouldn't be an issue. Tiny Boxes open. —Spencer Griffith
