Brontë sisters fans and detractors alike, take note: in The Moors, a high-spirited young governess named Emilie ventures to a house of secrets in the forbidding British lowlands after its master, Branwell, offers her long-term employment and implies the possibility of long-term companionship as well. But upon Emilie's arrival, Branwell and his offspring are missing, and his sister, the secretive, sinister spinster Agatha, is in charge, keeping a very tight leash on her strangely young-at-heart sister and the house's sole servant. Instead of getting the hell out of there, Emilie becomes ensnared in a web of intrigue. Think you know the rest of the story? Consider this: playwright Jen Silverman is interested in playing with the tropes of melodrama and Gothic romance, reimagining the world the Brontës created, in critic Jesse Greene's words, as "a wilderness in which the savagery of the environment produces savage heroines." —Byron Woods
