The Mercators, The Temperance League, Bside Project

When: Fri., Nov. 1, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $6
Durham's Mercators and Charlotte's Temperance League depend on different sides of rock 'n' roll. The former prefers to slink and shimmy along bluesy through lines that point to the Stones' grungiest moments, and barbed solos that just point to grunge. They manage time-tested tools and rarely push the limits of them. Temperance League gets closer to the wild magic conjured by their influences. Singer Bruce Hazel's rich warble has a raspy edge, like The Boss if he smoked a pack a day. Behind his bitter but redemptive narratives, his backers execute driving melodies more in line with Springsteen's forebears from decades earlier. —Jordan Lawrence
