The Mantras, Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band

When: Sat., Dec. 29, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $12-15

In the midst of recording its fourth studio effort with Umphrey's McGee guitarist Jake Cinninger, Greensboro's The Mantras break for a brief New Years' run. The kaleidoscopic quintet's brand of jam rock is both proggy and funky, threaded with electronic, reggae and Middle Eastern elements. Fans of Ween should appreciate the occasionally absurd approach and oddball vocals. Veteran Asheville funk sextet Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band brings the party vibe in the first slot of the doubleheader, offsetting The Mantras' busier sound with groove-driven tunes flavored by horns and insouciant soul vocals. Tickets are $12–$15 for the 9 p.m. show. —Spencer Griffith
