THE LOCK-IN CABARET

THURSDAY, AUG. 13, PITTSBORO

THE PITTSBORO ROADHOUSE & GENERAL STORE—According to Jessica Nunn, artistic director of Chatham County's Phoenix Theatre Company, the lock-in is a British tradition of bolting the pub doors at night's end to keep entertaining a select group of patrons. The Lock-In Cabaret treats that concept figuratively, as shorthand for casual intimacy with audiences. It's a variety show that features comedy, music and circus acts; this one includes Triad-based comedian Adam Cohen, "acrobatic duo" Doom and Gloom and corseted emcee Savannah duPrae. It sounds a lot different than the lock-ins I went to as a kid, which involved spending the night in a Baptist church. I was going to pitch this as a more debauched version of that—until I paused to remember what actually went on at those church lock-ins. So never mind. 7 p.m., free, 39 West St., Pittsboro, 919-542-2432, www.facebook.com/ThePhoenixTheatreCompany.Brian Howe
