The Last Waltz

When: Thu., July 26, 7:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $5

As far as concert films/ music documentaries go,nothing beats the 1978 film The Last Waltz (the first film up in theColony's new Music at the Movies series) in terms of pure cinematicjoy and witnessing a group of musicians truly in their element. Even ifyou've never gotten into the music of The Band, the rock 'n' rollquintet (which included guitarist Robbie Robertson and the late, greatdrummer Levon Helm) whose last, star-studded show on Thanksgiving Day1976 is documented in this film, you will no doubt feast—pardon thepun—on the immaculate live performances, elegantly yet viscerallycaptured by director Martin Scorsese (of course!). A sophisticated yettruly sensational union of sight and sound, The Last Waltz proved that, when a great filmmaker is behind the lens, even a doc about a worn-outrock band can be a testament to great art. —CraigD.
