Comedy

From the team that brought you Wedding Crashers, the studiously safe and depressingly stale comedy The Internship reunites Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as aging luxury watch salesmen who infiltrate Google's internship program. The boys lead the standard-issue ragtag bunch of underdogs as they compete in a series of intern challenges. The prize? A full-time job at Google. The film's strengths are in the performances—Wilson's laconic charm still holds up, and Vaughn's loveable motormouth schtick is as close to a sure thing as you're going to get at the multiplex. But the movie is so slavishly devoted to formula that it actually feels insulting. The tired plot points thud into place on cue, and you'll see every joke coming about 45 seconds before it lands. The hack script work and relentless product placement make The Internship come off as particularly cynical. Comedies shouldn't make you feel like a sucker for laughing at them.
