The INDY Endorses James Barrett, Joal Hall Broun, Mary Ann Wolf, and Amy Fowler for Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools

Seven candidates are seeking four spots on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education. Seeing as how everyone running seems to think things are moving in the right direction, we see no reason to displace the two incumbents seeking reelection, James Barrett and Joal Hall Broun.

As for the two open seats, we're backing Mary Ann Wolf and Amy Fowler. Fowler, a pediatrician at Chapel Hill Children's Clinic, has been a volunteer in the school system for more than a decade and has been the leader of the Special Needs Advisory Council for the last two years. She's focused, among other things, on closing the achievement gap through offering high-quality preschool.

Mary Ann Wolf, a Ph.D. in education and director of the Professional Learning and Leading Collaborative at The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at N.C. State, believes in the fundamental importance of arts, music, and physical education instruction and wants to address racial disparities in the school system: "Equity should not be framed as simply equal inputs for all, but rather as ensuring that each student has what he or she needs to reach his or her potential," she says.
