The In-Laws

When: Fri., Jan. 5, 8 p.m. 2018
Price: $5-$7

Billed as "The FIRST Certified Crazy Person's Comedy," The In-Laws starts at absurd and hits the gas from there. The 1979 film's high-concept plot—an uptight guy is drawn into the danger-filled world of a future in-law—has been redone many times, including a terribly flat 2003 remake with Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks. Accept no substitutes: while few might think of Peter Falk and Alan Arkin as a headlining comedy team, they achieve tremendous belly laughs. Falk's rogue CIA operative calmly summarizes the danger they're in as smoothly as Columbo doing an interrogation (and delivers an insane monologue about the "Guacamole Act" and children-stealing giant flies). Arkin's straitlaced dentist is driven to increasing levels of panicked apoplexy as he's thrown into danger again and again (the "Serpentine!" scene is a classic). And that's before Richard Libertini shows up as the world's worst dictator and there's a firing squad singing "Trees." Just watch and laugh. —Zack Smith
