The Hot Sardines

When: Fri., Sept. 5, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $24-$36
As people realize how energetic and messy early jazz could be, retro bands continue to find fresh audiences. The Hot Sardines play trad jazz—New Orleans and Parisian standards from the '20s, '30s and '40s—with an edge, as if the cops could bust in waving billy clubs. Built on bandleader Evan "Bibs" Palazzo's stride piano and the brassy vocals of "Miz Elizabeth" Bougerol, this New York ensemble even incorporates tap dancing in its percussion section. Their raucous, speakeasy sound makes Pink Martini seem schmaltzy and tame by comparison. Arrive at 6:30 p.m. for an opening set by Raleigh's Sidecar Social Club. —Chris Vitiello
