The Hot at Nights, Matthew Stevens

When: Sat., Sept. 30, 8 p.m. 2017
Price: $24

Few Triangle bands include as much densely packed talent as the Raleigh trio The Hot at Nights. Its three members have worked with a wide range of artists, including Hiss Golden Messenger, The Foreign Exchange, The Mountain Goats, Gene Ween, and Jeanne Jolly. But when these players combine forces, they come up with a curious and thrilling blend of mostly jazz and rock, with flourishes of funk and R & B, and a few proggy twists thrown in for good measure. Three Kids, which the band released in May, is a heady, inventive LP defined by hard turns toward synth and electronic elements. In the opening slot is Matthew Stevens, another jazz devotee whose approach to his music extends much further. He shares The Hot at Nights' adventurous, eager spirit, which should make for a well-rounded evening of music. —Allison Hussey
