Dr. Hamilton joined the faculty in the Department of Medicine at Duke in 1971, serving first as the Chief of the Durham VA Infectious Diseases Section from 1971 to 1994, and then as Chief of the adult Duke Infectious Diseases and International Health Division from 1994 to 2010.
