The History and the Art of Drag

When: Tue., July 1, 7 p.m. 2014
Price: Free

The public library may seem an unlikely place to encounter a drag queen in all her glamor and glory, but that's exactly who you'll find at the Durham County Library on Roxboro Street this Tuesday. Dr. Michelle Robinson, an Assistant Professor of American Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill who focuses on topics relating to gender and sexuality, delivers a talk about the history of drag in the U.S. from New York to Mississippi, from Justin Vivian Bond's Kiki and Herb guise to RuPaul's Drag Race. For most drag performers, the experience is far more significant than playing dress-up; Robinson will address the opportunities for exploration that drag offers stars and audiences alike. Following the lecture is a drag show featuring Jazmine Brooks, Vivian Vaughn, rookie drag king Spray J. and 10-year veteran Vivica C. Coxx, who you can catch regularly at her drag showcase at the Pinhook. —Allison Hussey
