Comedy

Director Paul Feig's followup to Bridesmaids, The Heat stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in an all-estrogen take on the buddy cop comedy. Bullock is the snob – an uptight FBI agent with a passion for rules. McCarthy is the slob – a disheveled Boston cop with a temper and a dirty mouth. It's the oldest of comic set-ups, and a movie like this lives and dies by its performances. Bullock more or less cedes the screen to McCarthy, who delivers enough individually funny scenes to avoid a total loss. McCarthy always finds a funny approach vector, and she knows how to commit to a gag. But the rest is half-baked crime fighting, phony bonding montages and reverse dick jokes about lady parts. It all feels like a real missed opportunity.
