THE GREAT MUPPET CAPER AND SPIES LIKE US

FRIDAY, APRIL 17, DURHAM THE CAROLINA THEATRE—Two particularly offbeat box-office hits of the 1980s fill out this "Retrotreasures" double-feature. The Great Muppet Caper, from 1981, is the only Muppet film directed by Jim Henson himself. Absurd even by Muppet standards, it features Kermit and Fozzie as "identical" twin reporters who stumble onto a scheme involving stolen jewels. Charles Grodin steals the show as the sneering villain, though Peter Falk also has a killer bit as an old man in a park who provides a lengthy, completely inaccurate guess as to what's bothering Kermit. Spies Like Us, a 1985 Dan Aykroyd/Chevy Chase vehicle that pays homage to the classic road-trip comedies of Bing Crosby and Bob Hope (who has a cameo), is the tale of two incompetent CIA applicants sent on a deadly mission. Spies deserves cult immortality if only for the "Doctor ..." "Doctor ..." "Doctor ..." "Doctor ..." scene. You kind of have to see it for yourself. Look for a number of filmmakers, including Terry Gilliam and Ray Harryhausen, in cameos. 7 p.m., $9, 309 W. Morgan St., Durham, 919-560-3030, www.carolinatheatre.org
