The Great Cover Up

When: Thu., Dec. 9, 9:30 p.m. 2010

Two years ago, concerns about real issues—the struggling financial sector, public health options, unemployment, America's love of wartime—fell to the politics of rock 'n' roll, at least in Raleigh. The downtown Irish pub Tir na nOg stepped up as a live-music hub after the demise of beloved rock club Kings, which was all well and good. Then Tir na nOg decided to borrow a concept that had been popular at Kings—drafting local musicians to cover some of their favorite bands for charity—and borrow it while Kings looked for a new throne. Oh, the outcry: Suddenly, those nights at Kings became less about the music or the fundraising or the fun than the proprietary scene politics. Folks raised hell on blogs and in e-mails. As a reasonable person might have guessed, neither the world nor Raleigh actually ended from the Cover-Up Crisis of 2008. Rather, Kings found a new home, and Chris Tamplin, the guy who made Tir na nOg such an important music locale in Raleigh, moved to Durham. The Great Cover-Up returns to its original home for a three-night stand Thursday–Saturday. Expect five to seven bands each night, beginning at 9:30 p.m. Raleigh, at last, is safe for covers.
