One of Raleigh's most esteemed annual tradition is Kings' nearly twenty-year-old Great Cover Up, wherein local musicians pay tribute to some of their favorite acts. Their efforts can be as elaborately wide-ranging as they are earnest—previous years have included nods to Siouxsie and the Banshees, Carly Simon, The Mummies, Fleetwood Mac, Atlanta Rhythm Section, and Phil Collins. Though the spirit of most Cover Up bands is surprise, one-off sets, some favorite outfits have gone on to make occasional extracurricular appearances: see The Whom, a spirited and convincing tribute to The Who, or the TV Man Band, which tackles beloved television theme songs. In addition to all the musical fun, The Cover Up's proceeds all go to charity, with this year's beneficiaries including KidzNotes, InterAct, and others. If you miss night one, all is not lost—the Cover Up extends for three more nights, through Saturday, January 13. —Allison Hussey
