The Goonies

When: Thu., June 2, 7 p.m. 2011
Price: $5

"Goonies never say die!" When there's a revival series for 1980s movies, The Goonies will be there. When there's a series of all-ages fantasy films, The Goonies will be there. When people talk Sloth, or Chunk, or the "Truffle Shuffle," you bet The Goonies will be there. And when people talk about how movies for kids just aren't as good as when they were growing up, The Goonies will definitely be there. Richard Donner's 1985 tale of kids hunting treasure to save their homes lacks a bit of logic; the nerdcore rapper MC Chris has a wonderful rant where he wonders how the treasure map got in Mikey's attic and why the restaurant was built on top of the pirate cave, and you'll have to watch the DVD to see the bit with the octopus the kids mention at the end. And yeah, "Data" is kind of a stereotype of brainy Asians, but weren't they all stereotypes of sorts? Point is, you're a kid—you want an adventure where you save the day when the adults can't, lay the smack down on the evil, kid-hating bullies and occasionally get to swear. And that's what The Goonies is all about. Though I'm still wondering how the hell Chunk's parents reacted when he told them Sloth would be living with them. That's just an awkward situation. Relive the greatness at the Galaxy Cinema at 7 p.m. —Zack Smith
