The Good Life, Big Harp (Back Room)

When: Sat., Aug. 29, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $12-$14
Where Tim Kasher has tackled heady topics like religion and divorce on heavily conceptual Cursive LPs, The Good Life—his other Midwestern indie rock band—trends broadly miserable. On this year’s Everybody’s Coming Down, Kasher waxes existential on the zero-sum game of human existence. “All this will end/We’re flotsam locked into a groove,” he bleats over an aqueous riff. Where his lyrical eviscerations were once pointed and poignant, they’re now more conventional and banal. Couple that with The Good Life’s metamorphosis into a quotidian loud-quiet-loud indie rock band, and it’s doubly disappointing. —Patrick Wall
