Drama, SciFi/Fantasy

Based on a popular young-adult novel, this film is yet another story of attractive teenagers in a dystopian sci-fi future. Our hero, Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), is coming of age in the Community, a creepy village suspended in the sky after an undisclosed cataclysm. Emotions are chemically suppressed in the Community, and all dangerous stimuli have been removedart, dancing, music and so on. Meryl Streep plays the village's stern Chief Elder and Jeff Bridges is the mysterious Giver of Memories. Like The Hunger Games and Divergent, the film is more interested in the sociology of sci-fi than the hard tech, and that's encouraging. But the overtly commercial gloss removes all sharp edges, and the attempts at adding teen romance and action fail pretty miserably. I hear the book is good, though.
